Going for the Best

By bhittai

The prophet (p.b.u.h.) said that our tomorrow should be better than today. Our ambition of going for the best is the driver behind our progress and development. This characteristic distinguishes us from animals and is the secret of great civilizations and cultures we have developed over time. Advancement in science and technology is another example of going for the best.

Even though we have flourished and progressed in all walks of life yet our level of happiness remains the same and has not increased. It is only relative that we have so many things for our excitement and luxury, that doesn’t seem to have made us happier people than before. We think that once we achieve something we will be all set and happy. That never happens rather more is needed to be happy over time which never ends. This is because our mind adapts to the conditions we live in and happiness becomes relative to those conditions.

There are basic things which if  we don’t get, we sure will remain unhappy. Those are the things which are needed for survival like food, shelter, respect and freedom. All other things are relative and don’t guarantee us happiness. Folks who think they would remain happy if they got this and this, may want to review their approach.

Where going for the best is the cause of our progress and development, it has created problems for us too. We forget what we have achieved so far and therefore are never satisfied, we only repent after something is snatched or is no more with us. We tend to be ungrateful beings. We hardly appreciate what we have, we only look at what we don’t have which makes us unhappy specie on the earth.
