Heart versus Mind

By bhittai

Our knowledge is relative, a person with little more knowledge can prove a right person wrong. Mind does all the reasoning but its acceptance or rejection comes from heart. This suggests that heart has more power and knowledge than mind. It’s good to think and reason but since no one’s knowledge is perfect or complete so it is all right to listen to heart when it comes to making a decision.

Mind has been and still is under the process of evolution. If people would have followed mind only, they certainly would have followed a little or no truth at all. In that case the people who were poorly ‘educated’ would have almost no chance to find the truth. At the same time only well ‘educated’ people would have some chance to find the truth and that would be a big injustice. Shah Lateef says:

هلو هلو ڪاڪِ تڙين جتي ِنينهَن اُڇَلَ
نه ڪا جَهلَ نه پَلَ سڀڪو پسي پِرينءَ کي

By giving everybody a heart and mind, God has given everyone same chance to find the truth. Since truth is not hidden so everyone can look around the magnificent universe and easily find it out by opening mind and heart. Knowledge is not through reason only, that is why we find knowledgeable people among ‘illiterate’ as well as ’educated’ people of all times.

As our languages, senses, reason and mind are limited therefore the truth cannot be easily reached through these instruments. Since our heart is free of these limitations therefore it has the ability and capability to directly grasp the truth. When our mind is unable to make a decision we should listen to our heart - that is what belief is.
